@benj: Ok, I got your point. But in this competition we should keep in mind that there would be weekly themes (the song genre usually varies). The contestants should perform good if they want people to vote for them or else they're out (except if they got fans who will support them whether you perform good or not).

Yeng failed miserably when she tried to diva it up. She didn't win because she sang "I Will Always Love You". All her big hits during the show were pop rock tunes. Most of the songs sang by Panky, Chad and Jay-R were also in the rock/ pop-rock category. Yeng won not because she sang Whitney songs. She won because 1) she was pimped like no other and 2) her single became a national phenomenon.

That's such an old fashioned way of seeing music. Rock is more demanding than what you give it credit for. Artists don't necessarily have to sing each genre to prove that they're great. The pop singers will continue to do the same thing and that would be "good singing" and no one would mention a peep about "versatility".

@Benj: I just don't think singing a rock song would show the best of your vocals especially if the song is full of screaming and shouting. I just don't appreciate too much rock. Anyway, Yeng wasn't that focused on the Rock genre but also tried other genres too which I think won the hearts of the viewers and eventually voted her to become the winner. I think that some (I'm not generalizing) rock singers lack versatility. The rock singers in the competition should try other genres in the future to prove how great they are as a singer.

Anyway, thanks for listening!

Actually, I disagree. Rock has a market. Of the six people who made it to the final of Pinoy Dream Academy, FOUR had a rock edge - Panky, Yeng, Jay-R and Chad. The person who finished at 7th - Yvan - also had pop-rock in him. It's not really a big gamble nowadays.

I think Ram Chaves shot himself by picking that song. He exposed his thin vocals with that one. I doubt if he can cover Bamboo decently. Given the competition though, he is still the best. Picking Bamboo would've been soooo obvious. It would appeal to stupid people who will draw the connection between his bald head and Bamboo's but other than that, it's a novelty act waiting to happen.

For some reason, you seem insinuate that singing rock doesn't showcase one's voice. That's a very traditional view that only subscribes to ONE way of singing and only ONE acceptable technique. Music is changing... Actually, it has changed a long time ago and people who think that the only way to sing well is to sing like Aretha and Stevie are so behind the curve.
